Jason Lang & Louise McKinney Scholarships
The Government of Alberta, through Alberta Advanced Education, funds the Jason Lang Scholarship and the Louise McKinney Scholarship to recognize and reward outstanding academic achievements of post‑secondary students in Alberta.
These scholarships encourage students to continue their undergraduate or professional programs. Both awards are administered by the University of Alberta in conjunction with Alberta Student Aid. Jason Lang Scholarship: $1,000

Louise McKinney Scholarship: $2,500
Students can only receive one of these two scholarships per year. The Louise McKinney Scholarship has a limited number of awards. If you apply for it and are not selected, you will automatically be considered for the Jason Lang Scholarship instead.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

Citizenship: Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Alberta residency (one of the following):
-
One parent or legal guardian has maintained permanent residence in Canada for at least 12 consecutive months immediately before starting post‑secondary studies and is residing in Alberta; OR
-
Alberta is the last place the student has lived for 12 consecutive months immediately before starting post‑secondary studies; OR
-
The student’s spouse/partner has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for 12 consecutive months before the student attends post‑secondary studies.

Enrollment: Full‑time in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate degree or professional program at an eligible publicly funded Alberta post‑secondary institution.

Minimum GPA: 3.5 (between September and April of the previous academic year).

Course load: Completed at least 80% of a full‑normal course load (e.g., at least 24 units of course weight for most programs) between September and April of the previous academic year.
Important Note: The minimum GPA requirement has changed from 3.2 to 3.5 for Fall 2025 and subsequent semesters.
Additional Eligibility Notes

Transfer students: Assessed for the Jason Lang Scholarship by the institution they currently attend. Not eligible for the Louise McKinney Scholarship.

Co‑op students: Work terms, WKEXP work terms, and practicum terms are not included. Assessment based on paired academic terms. Recommended to apply each year.

Exchange students: If you participated in an official University of Alberta exchange, apply and Student Financial Support will determine eligibility.

How to Apply
Step 1: Log into the Awards Hub (University of Alberta’s online scholarship portal) before the posted deadline.
Step 2: Complete the General Application section in the “My Applications” tab.
Step 3: In the “Opportunities” tab, search for “Jason Lang” and click APPLY. Then click Finish to submit your application.
Note: You do not need to update the General Application section if you have already completed it when submitting your current year undergraduate scholarship application.
Automatic consideration: Once you apply for the Jason Lang Scholarship, you will also be considered for the Louise McKinney Scholarship (same application).

Notification
You will be notified by Student Financial Support approximately one month after each deadline date as to whether or not you have been nominated.
