Who Can Apply?
NIDA fellowships are open to non‑US citizens. You must hold a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent). You should have experience in drug abuse research. You must be living and working outside the United States at the time of application. You also need good English skills.
Three Types of NIDA Fellowships
1. DISCA and USDISCA Fellowships for Senior Researchers
These awards are for senior researchers with at least seven years of experience beyond postdoctoral training. You must have a strong publication record. The fellowship covers a research exchange visit of at least four weeks. You receive a one‑time payment of up to $8,000 for living expenses and round‑trip airfare. You are responsible for your visa and health insurance.
To apply, send your application electronically to ip@nida.nih.gov. There is no fixed deadline – applications are accepted year‑round.
2. Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Use and Addiction Research Fellowship
This is a 10‑month, non‑degree program for mid‑career professionals. You will study at a US university and complete a six‑week research placement with a NIDA‑supported scientist. The fellowship covers tuition, living allowance, book allowance, round‑trip airfare, health insurance, and professional development activities.
You need a doctoral degree (master’s with extensive experience may be considered). You must have a mid‑career position in a university, government ministry, NGO, or healthcare organization. Contact your local Fulbright Commission or US Embassy to apply.

INVEST/Clinical Trials Network (CTN) Fellowship – For research on clinical trials, intervention methods, or HIV/AIDS prevention.
-
INVEST Prevention Fellowship – Focuses on prevention science.

Eligibility: You must have a doctoral degree and at least two years of postdoctoral experience (recommended). Your home institution must provide a letter assuring you a position after the fellowship. You must be a citizen or permanent resident of a country other than the USA.
How to Apply for INVEST Fellowships

Once you have a mentor, complete the application form together. Your mentor must provide a mentor statement and a letter from their institution confirming they can sponsor your J‑1 visa. You also need two reference letters, your doctoral degree certificate, and a letter of assurance from your home employer.
Submit everything by email to ip@nida.nih.gov.

For INVEST fellowships, the deadlines are April 1 and October 1 each year. Awards are notified on December 1 for the October deadline.
