Introduction
The Basic Medical Sciences Institute (BMSI) is a historic public sector postgraduate research institute located within the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi, Pakistan. Established in 1958-59, it was Pakistan's first institute of its kind, created to advance knowledge in basic medical sciences and train medical educators.
History
The institute was authorized by the National Assembly of Pakistan in August 1954. It was established with assistance from Indiana University, USA, which provided faculty and expertise. The BMSI was officially opened on 11th April 1959 by the President of Pakistan, General Ayub Khan. In 1962, BMSI merged with Jinnah Central Hospital to form the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). The institute initially comprised six departments: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology.
Location and Campus
BMSI is located within the JPMC complex on Rafiqui Shaheed Road in Karachi Cantonment, Karachi. JPMC itself is spread over 148 acres and is one of the largest public sector hospitals in Pakistan.
Academic Programs
BMSI offers postgraduate training in basic medical sciences. The institute is affiliated with the University of Karachi for MPhil and PhD programs. It also offers two-year MPhil programs, with 72 MPhil students registered at one point. The institute has produced hundreds of postgraduates serving in public and private sector medical colleges across Pakistan.
Recent Developments
In October 2024, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) signed a 25-year agreement with JPMC to restructure BMSI. Under the agreement, JSMU will assume administrative and academic control of BMSI and develop it into a School of Postgraduate Studies offering programs in basic, clinical, and allied health sciences. The institute is also being revamped and renovated with state-of-the-art equipment, including an electron microscope.
