The college was founded by the "Islamia Collegiate Committee" led by Sahibzada Abdul Qayyum and other prominent figures of the Khudai Khidmatgar movement. It stands as a symbol of the freedom struggle for the people of the Frontier. The foundation stone was laid in 1911, and classes began in a small room of Qissa Khwani Bazaar in 1913. The main campus was built between 1913 and 1920.
