Islamia College was founded in 1913 by the "Islamia Collegiate Committee" led by Sahibzada Abdul Qayyum, a close associate of the freedom movement. It stands as a symbol of the freedom struggle for the people of the Frontier. Construction of the main campus took place from 1913 to 1920, and the college was initially affiliated with the University of Peshawar. In 2008, it was upgraded to a full-fledged university through an Act of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
