The institute was established in December 2008 as the first-ever constituent institute of Khyber Medical University (KMU), which was itself established in 2007 under the Khyber Medical University Act, 2006. The institute has since grown into a leading public health institution in Pakistan, recently shifting to a new purpose-built campus in Phase V, Hayatabad, Peshawar.
