The university traces its roots back to the Jamia Abbasia, which was established in 1925 by His Highness Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi V, the then ruler of the Bahawalpur State. The Jamia Abbasia served as a center of Islamic and modern education in the region. After the merger of the Bahawalpur State into Pakistan, the institution was renamed the Islamia University and was granted full university status by the Punjab Assembly in 1975. The university adopted a modern, comprehensive curriculum and has since expanded to multiple campuses.
